Saying Goodbye to A Friend
7/22/2009 3:05:55 PM

It’s been more than a week since Miss Kitty died and this is the first time I’ve tried to put my feelings into the written word. My poem called Party Animal was written last September - it came to me after I browsed through our photo album and found the humorous picture of Callie all wrapped up in Christmas ribbon. I still chuckle as I remember how she loved to play in the tangle of paper, boxes and ribbons every Christmas morning.

For a week now, I’ve come home from work and fully expected to find Miss Kitty waiting for me. I’m convinced she could sense the time of day and was ready for the door to open. Then she’d race me up the stairs to the living room window and paw at the shades until I raised them for her. No matter how hot it was, she’d sit on the ledge and soak up the rays. I should have known something was wrong when she slept there hour after hour, seemingly not having the energy to do much else.

Then, when Callie quit eating, drinking and grooming herself, we knew something bad was coming-or had come. And we had no choice in the matter and so we said our goodbyes and bleary-eyed with tears, walked out of the Vet’s office emptied-handed and empty-hearted.

For the present I can’t see us getting another pet; to be honest, it hurts too darn much when they die. I’d rather put a layer of cotton batting around my heart, remember the eleven plus years that Callie shared her love with us and leave it at that.

If you want to meet our girl, take a look at my poetry section and read Party Animal; Miss Kitty is also mentioned in my most recent story, My Favorite Time of Year. It may bring a smile to your heart.
