My Favorite Mother Teresa Story
10/16/2007 6:14:00 PM
Last night I was interviewed on Sirius Satellite Radio about my book What Mother Teresa Taught Me which is full of stories about Mother Teresa, her life and her work. But when the host asked me, "What is your favorite Mother Teresa story?" my mind went blank.
Now my mind is full of stories about Mother Teresa. There was the time when the Vatican was giving Mother an award after she'd been working in the streets for only a year and she was not too well known. The Vatican sent her some tickets for her Missionaries of Charity sisters and herself.
There was one ticket missing so Mother arrived at the Vatican the evening of the ceremony without a ticket. The guards allowed all the other Sisters to enter but Mother had to wait outside. When a well known Bishop arrived, he greeted Mother who was standing just outside the gate with a sister. "Congratulations, Mother Teresa. You deserve this award." The guards were very embarrased and ushered Mother and the other sister inside.

Then when Mother Teresa won the Nobel Prize she asked them to cancel the banquet and give the money to her for the poor. There was a simple party after the ceremony and Mother Teresa misplaced the Nobel Prize medal. A co-worker found it under a stack of coats.

When Mother was getting a honorary doctorate at UCSD, she sat on the stage saying her rosary while the Mayor of San Diego introduced her with flowery words. "Here she is Mother Teresa," the Mayor said. Mother Teresa went on saying her rosary until someone walked over to her and touched her arm. "It's your turn to talk, Mother," and Mother folded her hands in a Namaste Indian greeting and began her talk.
