Many people do not realize that adult adoptees in 42 states in America do not have access to their "own" original birth certificate. This is a direct violation of our civil rights. Every other American citizen has complete access to all of their own vital records, including birth certificates.
Why are adoptees treated differently?
Many people belive that adoptee records were originally sealed in order to give birth mothers anonymity, this is a myth. The truth is that adoptee records were sealed in order to protect adoptive parents from interference from the birth parents. Even when the adoptee turns legal age of 18, the records remain sealed, who are they really trying to protect? Doesn't every adult adoptee have the choice to decide for themselves if they want contact and information from their birth parents when they are adults?
Even as a 42 year old adult citizen in the state of New Jersey I am still not allowed access to my own original birth certificate. This is a disgrace and I will not rest until all "50" states give back civil rights to "all" adult adoptees in America.
