The day the Front Page wept
A hot day's walk
There is a Memory Lane
A lost portrait of the old sod

Burt Bacharach is my favorite musician-composer, but in the summer of 1965, I wasn't all that impressed with one of his most famous collaborations with Hal David-Jackie DeShannon's recording of "what the World Needs Now (is Love)".
Everybody tried to convince me that the point of the song was that the world would be a better place if we loved each other and cared for our fellow man.
That wasn't my interpretation, but over the years, I grew up a little and got the message. This is my apologies for being a narrow-minded 10-year-old.
Burt, Hal and Dionne-
You wrote the sound track
of my life.
Burt, Hal and Jackie?
Well, nobody's perfect.
So please accept my apologies.
Burt and Hal were the best,
but when you met Jackie,
your hearts may have meant well...
But to a self-conscious 10-year-old
fighting those emerging feelings
amid the snickers of others
What the World didn't need now was love.
That's not what you meant?
How would I know?
There are things that kids
might not understand
Ever had your sister
grab your Valentine's box?
Yes, there are different kinds of love.
But do they sing songs about them on the radio?
And little boys could always use more mountains,
meadows, hillsides and rivers.
But girls are still icky.
All kinds of people,
I like the "B" side better.
Same thought without anything which might
cause mean freckle-faced eight-year-olds
to make smooching noises.

|I liked this article. When I was that age, my mother arranged kissing parties for my twin brother and I with some of the cutest girls around. While I didn't know what love was, it sure changed my libido! I was a bit older than you when Burt wrote that lilting tune and Dionne sang it like I knew the way to San Jose. Somehow, those songs got through my rock 'n roll mind and endured. Thanks for the memories.

|There are so many kinds of love: Love between lovers; Love and commitment between spouses; Love of friendship between two people; Love of innocent friendship between little boys and girls; and the Love of caring for our parents; and finally.. the Love in music that can transport us to every stage of our life.
Each stage of our lives we are presented the special kind of love that we need. No one can live without love of some kind; if so, the world would become a cruel and loveless place.
Thank you for leading us down your memory lane, it is thought-provoking, and made me think of mine too.
