This sonnet is the preface to A.S. Ziner's "Evergreen: A Space-Time Odyssey." "Dominion" sets the stage for this unearthly supernatural, science fiction adventure.

With Sound
Dominion
I look down and see a tiny ant, perhaps a baby,
no more than a few grains of sand in length.
It is moving along on a path it has set, determined,
unaware that another creature could be so immense and so close.
Without thinking I press it against my index finger.
Without a sound I end its life.
Gone is its destiny, for what it's worth to me, extinguished,
not even an impact on my skin, then a rinse.
How fortunate I am not to be bound to the footsteps of giants,
not to be fated by broader forces beyond my control.
Then, after a moment's reflection, it becomes uncomfortably clear.
That brutal end to a small, purposeful life could have been my own.
And I think, my God, what have I done?
What have I become?
- A.S. Ziner

I have habit of leaving the smaller creatures alone, including spiders around the house, except blackwidows. Makes my wife crazy.
I leave the ants alone too, until they get into my cupboards, fridge, and countertops. I liked Dominion. It gives pause for thought. Patrick |

| Very interesting or maybe coincident...I noticed a baby ant today around my sink and decided not to kill. It was wet, almost dying and I moved it carefully away, let the baby live... by saving the ant I saved myself from getting hurt from the invisable powers above. I am interested in philasophy, also fantasy, scientific futuristic stories and looking forward buying your book. Best wishes, Ankin |

| I have left positive comments on Professor Ziner's other poetry but, to me, this sonnet is zen-like. I plan to bring Evergreen into my high school English and reading classes this fall. I find a steady message in his work that reflects a genuine empathy for people (and afflicted non-people!). I hope you can find the time to read his book. It's personally felt and experienced and fun to talk about with others. |

A.S.,
A resonating truth here. Our callous diregard for those we share this space with can so easily be understood when one ponders the purposeful life. We, being creatures of whimsy, simply don't ponder overmuch anymore - or worse yet - don't care.
Looking forward to the odyssey.
