American Soldier...

This is a poem I wrote which was inspired by a Carol Wimmer poem.

When I say... "I am an American Soldier"
I'm not shouting, I'm better than you.
I'm whispering, I was a boy, and now I find myself a man.

When I say... "I am an American Soldier"
I don't speak only of this with pride...I'm also confessing, that I stumble and make mistakes and need competent leadership to help guide me, so I, in turn can be a competent leader.

When I say... "I am an American Soldier"
I'm not trying to be strong...I'm professing that I am weak and need the strength of my peers and country to help me carry on.

When I say... "I am an American Soldier"
I'm not bragging of past successes
I'm admitting I have failed in the past
admitted the mistakes and tried to right the wrongs.

When I say... "I am an American Soldier"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible
But my country needs me, and I soldier on.

When I say... "I am an American Soldier"
I can still feel the sting of pain, from seeing those that I care about die, while we fight for those that we love
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon the American People to help guide our soldiers home

When I say... "I am an American Soldier"
I'm not better than thou,
I'm just a simple man
Who was called upon by his country to fight

...AND I THANK YOU MICHAEL FOR BEING AN AMERICAN SOLDIER...FOR ME AND SO MANY OTHERS THAT ARE SO SMALL IN YOUR SHADOW. I AM NOT ATTEMPTING TO USE VAIN WORDS TO MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD, OR TO MAKE ME...LOOK GOOD. BUT ITS A FACT; SOLDIERS ARE SPECIAL PEOPLE WHO, FOR LOVE OF GOD AND THEIR COUNTRY, DO WHAT SO OTHERS WON'T DO. GOD BLESS AND THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...

Welcome indeed Michael. This is excellent work and far understates the value of your, and others, service to your country, for me and the millions of our fellow citizens. Thank you Patrick

Michael, This poem is an amazing profession of your inner strength and loyalty. My ex husband was drafted in 1972 into the Vietnam War, he luckily didn't go overseas, but was very loyal to the Air Force. After his tour of duty, he went into the Air National Guard, where he stayed until retirement. He has seen much and I have experienced much through his eyes. No one can walk in your shoes, but just know that I understand where you have come from. It is not an easy life, but there are many rewards and I know much sacrifice. I feel proud and lucky to know that you were one of those soldiers that cared about their fellow man and you do and did all that you possibly could do to make a difference.
You are blessed with a keen sense of wisdom at such a young age, never lose sight of who you are and what your destiny holds.
I see good things for you, and know that there are angels looking over you.
Much peace, love, and light,
Amber "V"

I love your third stanza... for without the support of a soldier's country he is nothing but a man fighting without a cause.
