At What Cost

a child whimpers as arms wrap around drawing her closer to them
she hears the gunfire in the background getting closer at each burst
there are tears in her eyes...will she ever see mommie...or daddy again
then there is silence...

we weep as a nation when the news of their deaths are revealed
children slaughtered openly for all to see...all to feel...all to remember
never to hear their laughter...never to see their smiles...gone forever
our helplessness felt as we hang our heads...knowing the truth

a civilized world no longer resides in our country where guns reign
guns of war...loose on the streets...childrens' safety always at risk
as people fight over what is right or wrong...always arguing...for what
till the next massacre occurs...this one...maybe...closer to home

arming the nation for protection..or will that be for another act of madness
how does one know what is in the mind of a person with a gun
may be safe...but then...something snaps...something undetected
does that justifies arming everyone...taking the cheap way out

Good reflective piece. How many more will lose their lives to gun violence?! Isn't time we say enough is enough?

Peace,
