Written after my dad died, 2/12/07; 14 1/2 years after being paralyzed from the neck down. He couldn't even breathe on his own. Love you, Daddy!

I Am Free

I am free now...

Since I left you,

I have danced a waltz with my mother.
I have opened my arms to my father, my sister, my brother.
I have held my grandson in my arms.
I have shared laughter with friends here before me.

I am free now....

Since I left you,

I have run the length of a football field.
I have swam the distance of a lake.
I have sun songs of folly.
I have smelled the sweetness of a freshly mowed lawn.

I am free now...

In all the things I am now free to do,
the one thing I have not done,
                        I have not forgotten you.
