Dorothea in the Mirror, a Jill Szekely mystery
by Lois Santalo

It seems the ultimate irony that Jewish pianist Zoltan Szekely is arrested for the murder of Dorothea Granger. Has he escaped Hitler's grim assault only to become enmeshe..

Rise Again

Rising up, rising high,
I am born again to fly...

 Walk through fire...
Taking me higher...
A revelation without a sound,
a prohecy without a prophet;
who is here to wash the ground
of the ashes, ashes that he left us?

I cannot find my way back home.
I cannot see--am I alone?
Is someone here in this darkness?
What was that? Is someone there?
No one hears his cries, his selfless
bleeding; he's searching for an answer.

Cold; people now surround me....
Where can I hide where they will not see
what I am, what I cannot stop from coming?
They would only judge me;
they would not see all my suff'ring;
they would only see a monster, not a human being.

What I am is not a curse,
but I feel sometimes like the monster
that haunts their dreams at night,
that spreads so much fear and pain.
He must learn when he must fight,
and when surrender is the only way.

But not now, not him--
no, he must spread his wings again;
he must learn to fly again,
he must learn to fight these feelings,
to find that fire burning within,
and unleash the phoenix he is...

Can't he see he's on his own?
Can't he fly away above the stone
upon which his ashes lay,
smoking without a fire....
Then a new glow; the flame's awake--
he spreads his wings, climbing higher:

Rising up, rising high--
I am born again to fly
above the land, above the earth,
above the oceans and the trees,
above the wastelands of my birth--
the phoenix rises: I am free!
