A poem about the modern-day syndrome.

You chase after excitement;

While running from reality.

You collect experiences;

While shirking responsibility.

You load yourself up with their drugs,

High on their illusion.

Wrapped up in confusion;

Forgotten your role.

You strongly believe

That those with beliefs,

Are nothing but sheep;

Following the lead.

You know something of everything,

An expert of nothing,

A subscriber to Darwin,

And the Time magazine.

A true intellectual,

Entirely left-brained,

No room for feeling,

A stallion;

You scoff at history,

Worship Scientific theory,

Postulate conspiracies,

Think God is growing weary.

You’re the modern generation;

Store memories on your hard drive;

Share pictures on Facebook;

Broadcast your lives.

You’ve been around the world,

In almost eighty days,

Burning up energy,

In the pursuit of selfish gain.

You escaped the rat race,

But the rat stowed away;

Followed you over seas;

Carrying the plague.

You’ve seen the Seven Wonders,

Lived among a tribe,

Complained about the culture,

In some superior diatribe.

You talk with authority,

On current affairs;

Bluffing like a poker player,

While sitting splitting hairs.

You’re nothing but a poodle;

A pampered little lap dog,

Barking at the wolves,

From the safety of your home.

But be warned:

These false walls won’t last forever.

And when they come crashing down,

Life will tear to you to pieces.

This poem reflects wisdom beyond the years of the young man in your photo playing the guitar. It's a little too harsh, too judgmental, and that last line could be more gripping, and less ripping. Still, very creative and exceptionally well done.

I really like this diatribe. While the word, “modern,” escapes meaning, I am everything but sharing Facebook pictures (I don't need Facebook to do that) and complaining about other cultures because when I went around the world in forty days I learned to respect other cultures for what they are––beautiful.

While we all may face perils in our life, and false walls will come down, I doubt that they will “tear one the pieces” except those too close.
