A Gift Of Butterflies
by David Toft

When, with just a fluttering of butterflies in your stomach, all your enemies will die, you must be very, very careful how you treat your friends...

I don't describe poems. Read it.

Humming -- he said-- Humming heals.

It wasn't that he completed me. I felt
no magnetic attraction to him, rather
a disconnected part of myself pulled closer,
verging on the snap-back to its place.

How heavy I felt
as I missed missing and
reached for the fleeting me,
fleeting in the air.

          Who was he?
Disturbed, scary, sad
And this is what disturbs and comforts me:
the refrigerator's hum
the vibration coming from somewhere
                     humming in the arms
of the wooden chair and up
through my skin.

Be mindful! -- of the hum of blood
                    inside
                    and of the wind
                     out there.
