This is a revision of Joel Sattler's lyric, also hosted on this website. Sattler's lyric is the best English version I have seen so far (I've seen a lot of really bad ones!) and I hope with these revisions it will become the preferred version.

HAPPINESS

A translation of A FELICIDADE

by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Morães

English Lyrics by Joel Sattler, rev. Nina Schwartz ©2012

Our grief goes on and on,

When happiness is gone.

Like—a feather flying in the wind,

That rides above a cloudy sky with ease,

Joy lasts a while,

Though it should go for miles,

It needs to find an ever-constant breeze.

Happiness to me is like a fantasy,

Or the waking dream of carnival.

You work all year long,

For one day in the sun.

When you are a new man,

And you make believe that you can—

Become—king or pirate, lover or anyone!

It’s over when the carnival is done.

Our grief goes on and on,

When happiness is gone.

Hap—piness is like a drop of dew,

That trembles on the petal of a rose.

Like lovers’ tears,

It falls and disappears,

And where it went to, no one ever knows.

Happiness is mirrored in my heart and soul,

When I look into your eyes, my love.

As night fades away,

To a brand-new day,

And the morning sun,

Tries to take you and to wake you,

My love! I will cover your lips with a kiss,

Your smile will be my memory of bliss.
