Hitting the 50 year mark and surviving!

Lucky So Far and Fifty (itsallaboutme)
12.22.2004

Fifty’s not bad when you look good as me!
I’d do it all again – well most of it – let’s see…
The hard parts didn’t kill me
The regrets I can’t fix
Forgiveness, forgive myself
Except for times when they come back.
Hauntingly….

Then it’s time to do something for someone else
Get out, see the world, find out others are
Suffering way more than I ever have
(And pray never will…)
But at least I look good for fifty
Whatever that means!

Like my Sudanese friends
And their 1000-mile walk…
The soldier in Iraq
Watching out for us all-
The homeless and cold
And the hungry and the ill
The sad, the lonely
Wishing only
They had the love I have….

Only a few things in my control
That’s me – how I look, how I care for myself
Whom I choose to help (good)
Whom I forget to help (bad)
Whom I love and tell (great!)
Whom I forget to tell (horrible!)
(Forgetting is an issue at fifty)

Are you asking, “Well, is this a funny poem or not?”
Well, is it?
That’s how fifty years add up…
It’s really funny sometimes
But sometimes it’s just not
But for fifty, I look damned good
And that’s the main thing. Right?

And lucky?
With all these people I love?
In return, I am loved.
My husband, my son, my father
My son’s sweet wife - like a daughter
A sister so sweet (a bit salty too)
Two brothers, two nieces, three crazy nephews.

Then all these grandsons
Who love me just because
Four boys – shining suns
The luckiest of grandmas!

And friends who still call me
From all over the world -
You are the blessings
That I just don’t deserve.

Well, is this a rhyming-funny poem or not?
That’s the other thing about 50 years:
Some days rhyme, some days laugh,
Some days flood with salty tears.

But I look pretty good for fifty years old
And now it’s time for my yoga class,
My facial and manicure
To open my gifts
Drink champagne
Enjoy dinner with my sweet spouse

And get ready for whatever comes next
I wonder if it gets harder
to
look
this
damned
good?
