flying home

At 38,000 feet

I look up into the dark void

where the stars beckon to me.

I could step out on these clouds,

leave the smell of jet fuel behind,

dismiss the clutter of the tiny galley,

the dimness of cockpit indicators,

and the hum of cabin conversation.

At 38,000 feet

I reach up into the dark purple

where the stars know me.

I might settle on this snowy blanket,

take the fresh, clean, thin air

into these fragile lungs,

feel the cold slip into delicate bones,

and hear the songs of the stars.
