Do you remember being a child?

I Remember

I remember a sunny day
1968
My chubby legs churned pedals
Of my cherry-apple tricycle -
I don’t remember where I was going
Although at three, one has Purpose
I was headed – Over there,
That way,
Down that clickety clack of sidewalk
Frills on my lemon yellow sunsuit
Flapped smartly.
As Proud flags they announced my quest:
I was going Somewhere.
I was sure there were
Sky high flowers
And chocolate trees over there -
I was sure of it -
Maybe I’d run into the Easter bunny
Or Rudolph
Or that one little old lady who walked
A fluffy dog who pulled at the leash in her hand.
That would be fantastic!
Maybe the doggy would like to share the lemon heads
I had clutched in my hands.

What was there – irrelevant
The possibility – all,
Magellan on a Radio Flyer™
Headed unto Foreign Parts.
