Persistent Past

Shadows haunt the halls of my heart
Not of what will be... but of what has been
They grow larger as I pull close the memories
The pain of how you betrayed my heart
I feel their teeth nipping at my bare ass
Screaming in the stark light of day
I race away only to find myself again trapped
In the fears, insecurities, failures of the past
I wear them like some badge of courage
Hoping they will ward off any future attacks
Knowing I am foolish in this hope
For life is not some wonderful place of tomorrows
Its nothing but a pit of the persistent past
That will forever swallow me whole

| I really related to this poem. I too have a past that seems to still haunts me at times. |
