When friends grow apart

Fork in the Road

Didn’t we always say
That the road we walked
Was ours, forever shared?

Now I see that “Forever’s”
Destiny is to become
“Once was” and “Used to be,”
One path changing into two,
Each just wide enough for
Either of us to walk, but
Not both of us together.

The fork in the road
Directs us to separate into
Paths lined with shards;
I recognize the ones of
My broken heart,
Waiting for me to
Pick them up,
One piece at a time.

As I start my new walk,
I think maybe, if I’m lucky,
The roads will rejoin
Once I pick up all the pieces
And fit them together
Into something whole,
But if not,
My healing heart and I
Will walk toward
The next sunrise
While wishing your road
Never loses the sun again.

Robert,
Amazing poem, we leave behind pieces of our heart wherever we go. I hope one day your paths will rejoin again, and you will walk together. God bless.

Many blessings,
~Linda

Painful reminders of what one was and is no more, yet you write so delicately. Sometimes we are guided down a different path for a purpose even though we may not know what that purpose is at the time, it will be revealed. Godspeed......

Be always safe,
Karen

I like this poem, Robert. The hope of returning to what once was seems eternal. I dreamed last night of a couple who split (breaking MY heart), and in the dream one said to the other, "In eleven more years we'll be back together." Isn't that a long time and isn't that weird? Good poem for love and friends and all who choose new paths. Eileen
