SWIMMING IN THE GENE POOL

The grey rope dances against
The dull metal flag pole,
Sending ripples through the stars
And turning red stripes into snakes.

Delivery trucks bellow up
And grumble out of sight.
No one walks the hot asphalt
And those who drive past look down.

Tree branches slowly undulate
At the bottom of the sky.
Long grasses sway as though hiding
Some unseen creature.

A cement truck twists past,
Its chute like an orange sword;
Brakes squeal somewhere out of sight
And a piece of sidewalk is born.
