About our Veterans of War

The Veteran

by Elizabeth Dunaj

Who is this Lot
The Veteran of old & Veteran of new
Who stand together
For me & you?

Who is this Lot
That leave family & friends
To wear a uniform
For us they defend?

This Lot you see
To keep our Country free
Will sacrifice life
For you & me.

Bravely stand they together
Yet are alone
For thier family & friends
They left back home.

This Lot knows
We understand not
For it only takes
one shot.

They have much to tell
But silence is kept
For the one who fell
As this Lot wept.

This is the Lot
The Veteran of old & the Veteran of new
Who strongly stand
To defend me & you!

Elizabeth: The Veteran was my Father who fought in World War II. The Veteran was my Brother who gave his life in Vietnam and to-date is listed as MIA. Iím blessed to have had a father and a brother who faced danger of conflict with courage in-order to preserve the right of people to remain free. I will always be indebted to their bravery and selfless devotion.

God Bless You,

This lot, now consisting of both men and women, often go into service for multiple reasons that have nothing to do with defending the country. Many also believe that they are invincible. That they will succeed in combat and nothing will happen to them.

On the other hand, when faced with combat, particularly the type that happens today with ambush at every hand and an unseen enemy, the toll on the psyche is great. Warriors are more wounded when they come back than victorious.

I can't see the skirmishes in Iraq and Afghanistan as saving us from anything like our battle with Hitler and fortunately, Cold War with the Soviet Union. Small actions, like the Navy SEALs killing Osama bin Laden are far more important than beating up on small nations.

Thanks to the Internet and its freedom of information, many small nations are becoming more democratic every day. We do not have to invade Iran for it to become free from tyranny. The process is underway in Iran right now and will happen with or without America's intervention.

I still admire our troops what they do. I feel sorry for what happens to them after their service.
