The Girl who had everything
by Audrey Coatesworth

This is a short story about a girl who had everything but is restless and, basically, unhappy. A poor girl who has apparently nothing, teaches her and her parents by exam..

This piece is dedicated to a professor I had in college--Dr. Leon Forrest. He thought I had some writing talent and encouraged me to write from my soul--not my mind. It was a breakthrough for me, and some of the best advice I've ever been given. I will always remember his impatience with me when I was afraid to speak (write) my truths. His good advice was limited to my writing only though...he also told me to become an attorney--which I am immensely glad that I didn't do--LOL! I understand that he passed away a few years ago, but his memory lives on within my heart. Enjoy...

”Step up”, he told me
”To the next level.
Your intellect is like
Cut glass filled with bevel;

That lets you see things
With multiple hue
And causes styled verse
To spin from you

I want this of you--
Do not disappoint.”
This teacher told me
To write a new joint.

Out poured my soul--
I gave him the draft.
He looked, became silent,
Then started to laugh…

"It wreaks of emotion
And stings me with soul.
My laughter hides tears
More valued than gold.

I defied you to rise
Up and write free.
And I now admit,
You’ve surpassed me."

He wistfully turned
His duty complete.
I published my work --
No editorial defeat.

And assured him as well
In the opening verse
That I’d never forget
Those words, his voice

So to him, to all
That cheer us to write
Thank you, thanks much
For taking the time

To read and review
Comment and chastise…
Thank you for your stop
To nurse a new find.

Your mentor was wise and shrewd indeed Wendy
You have an incredible talent in your soul, nurture it and let it grow naturally each day
Take care

I, for one, am so glad he advised you as he did, Wendi! You would make him proud! This is a loving tribute to him.
