Is home a place or a state of mind?

Home
I wish I could leave this place
A place called home
Is home where emotional wounds weep
from the constant reopening of scars?
Or is it a place where
instead of feeling comfort
I feel desolation and despair?
If this is what home is,
I'd rather be lost

I wish I were braver
able to find my own way
In a world full of strangers
But strangers are more pleasant
than my so-called family
Strangers don't curse at me
and make me feel small and lost
Perhaps I should live with strangers
That could be home for me

Can I continue to survive
in a place where I have nothing?
Will I shrivel and die from lack of self?
If I stay very quiet
and don't ask questions
nor ask for help
they sometimes leave me alone
and allow me to live.
Such is my life
An endless whorl of insults
A lack of respect and love
If this is what home is,
I'd rather be lost.
