This poem is published in my new novel for teens, THE PIRATE VORTEX: Elizabeth Latimer, Pirate Hunter

She had a red-painted thumb

With the Jolly Roger lined in black

She wore a neon blue wet suit

And carried a neoprene sack

What was in the sack?

Not Jack, not gin, nor rum

She carried the ghost of her father

And the phantom of her adventuring mum


Elizabeth was her name

And she sought no fortune nor fame

Her journey had just begun

And again, she carried no rum

The blasted pirates might get her

The raging sea beset her

She had to get to Nassau harbour

To find her meandering mum


The time chute swallowed her whole

 Onto the ruffian's sloop she emerged

Face to face she came with the captain

And his sword Where is my mother! she demanded

To the brig with you! he commanded

And Elizabeth found herself trapped In his pigheaded world


Now she needed the rum

If she was ever to find her mum

And learn what happened to her pirate hunter dad

It was so sad

The day he was lost

Was the day Elizabeth Latimer became

A pirate host

And now she is forever haunted

Because of the pirate ghost
