I wrote this poem in my early twenties for my high school/college friend Bonnie. We worked closely together for four years during our high school summer vacations, in the box office of the Marin Shakespeare Festival.

Ten years. No...


surely not...ten?


And here's another fine mess you've gotten us into.


You must not have tried,


Couldn't you have stopped short of ten?


Ten years older and


we're so many ages younger than we were then.


Why do you think they never told us


There's no such thing as a road map to life?


Or did we lost it along the way? I can't remember, now.


Ten years.


Can you see daylight, yet?


Me neither.


I saw a glimmer once, though.


That's okay...at least we have each other,


and I guess we're pretty lucky --


we haven't caught the cholera


stranded in the middle


of this silly swamp.


Stanley, can you hear me? Stanley?
