Hornet and Cicada

The large hornet pins
the cicada to the ground,
and usually pleasant
singing sounds
like crying and falters
from the stings.

With a stick
I try to separate
predator from prey,
but the hornet turns
on me, and I run,
but it soon turns back.

The hornet flies straight
and attacks the cicada again.
I listen from a distance
as the singing sputters
more and more
and then dies.
I stand in silence
and stare at the stick
in my hand.
