A Brooklyn Prostitute who died, and one who didn't

Away From Innocence
John Herndon

There was dirty ice – solid
On solid cement
She could have fallen
So hard - down through the earth
Sweet release it would have been too
Like when you give up and drown

What would be left behind?
The bourbon and the boys
That she brushed off her teeth
And scrubbed off her skin?
After a night
Of loving them so – often

What would be left behind?
The headlights that haunt this street
And tell you you’re pretty
Then bash your skull open
When they’re done
Like Janie?

What would be left behind?
Just pieces of her
Already fallen off
Every night on this dirty ice
And more will fall
Away from innocence

And now what remains
Begs of the moon
Let me fall way down through the earth
In sweet release
I want to drown

But the unrelenting moon
Will not give up on her
It holds her in its gravity
And keeps her walking upright somehow
For another day
Away from innocence
But maybe to somewhere
