Light-SKIN Brother Out of Style
by Alonda Alloway

Thursday, February 27, 2003

Tight rolled pants, Pumas, and asymmetrical hair cuts.
Collars up. Swerter sockc, tight Lees, and big butts.
My Coca-Cola shirt was sharper than your Panama Jack joint.
But your Sebagos had my Troops on point.
Shhhhit... those were the days.
Niggas started turning their curls into fades.
Was it your Scoop or Low Left?
Whatever it was your shit was def
as long as it was combable and you had that light skin
you could get any girl you wanted casue yo color got you in.
But now sistas don't want that cause your kind
done went out of style.
They're looking for a deep chocolate looking brother
with a thick lip and nose profile.
Yeah, it's wild how peoples taste in others seem to change with time.
I remember when and R&B cat wouldn't dare cut a record with a kid that could rhyme.
Now we got hits with white chicks on black mix tapes
playing in your Gramms boom box as she nukes cakes.
Debates about improper language being taught in our schools.
Homicide rate on high. Teen fathers are deemed cool.
The internet has all your information on a chip.
Vaccines are now required for your summer vacation trip.
You can hit me on my hip or call me on my cell.
Praises once for Allah are now for the ruler of Hell.
As we sell our souls for a little Lex, cash, or gold,
everyone's dying young, no chance to grow old
with your spouse or
should I say partner
since marriage is no longer the norm.
The form of the family is now extended.
Pay is low so shacks are rented.
Military recruits our sons on the verge of being grown.
Young men die abroad for land that we don't own.
But you consume your weed and Moie and thangs is getting crucial.
The nation all seemed to change when light-skin brothers
went out of style.

Hi Alonda! I READ "Light-skin brother Out of Style". Found it to be a very poignant piece of writing. I am not a person of color perse, but am a member of a minority group called "Metis"(pronounced,May-tee)Sometimes refered to as "Half-breeds". Wishing you the best of luck!

Alonda, you expressed yourself so well in this poem. At 73 I can still hear, see, and feel what you saying. But, we are all brothers and sisters in God's sight. May God Bless you. Betty. Mother of the Universe.

That's an interesting take. It tells me that we can pinpoint the so-called "decline" of society to any event we wish. (And, of course, each generation has its own version of when we fell and how far and how better our generaiton is than the next...but my ignorant white ass never thought to factor in subjective racial biases as well. That's really an interesting twist.) I'm still not sold on the very last rhyme though.
