I overheard a willow weep
(saddened by my intrusion?)
while skirting a field of wheat
soon to meet the silken sweep
of a garner’s fluid motion.
Then, as quick as the day began
it ended. Hearth beckoned me.
Homeward bound I cast around
but saw neither beast nor man;
yet the world was my company.
Halfway home I halted, briefly,
to listen to the silence;
as lofty thought came unsought,
and a cool breeze caressed me.
I rose to leave with reluctance.
