...World War II endless. In the steamy, life-sucking jungles, an unsung hero waits his turn...

A fiery plume smoking

starry claims on metal,
the smell of burning cloth

you see before ending
through the darkened lens

of the flamethrower’s son,
now across the jungle

the flame-thrower
waits his turn

with its gripped sweaty handle
with its rusty fire starter

through steamy jungle
shouting: clear the way! fire up! heads down!

I think of the flamethrower as one of the most hideous weapons of man, along with land mines. To be burned alive when you are hiding from bullets must be a terrible way to die. And you can't put your hands up in surrender or run out to try to escape, because you'd be running into the flames and sure death anyway.

I hope that flamethrowers will be banned from warfare forever.
