A Little Love Story

HANNAH GREW UP ON HAYES STREET
A GANGLY KIND OF KID WITH CLUMSY FEET
AND SOMETHING IN HER SMILE MADE MICHAEL STARE

AFTER SCHOOL MICHAEL'D JUMP THE FENCE
AND HANNAH'D SAY, MICHAEL YOU AIN'T GOT NO SENSE
AND MICHAEL WOULD DAY-DREAM RUNNING THROUGH HER HAIR

AND THE YEARS WENT BY
HANNAH WENT TO THE PROM WITH ANOTHER GUY
AND HE BROKE ALL HIS PROMISES BYE AND BYE
HANNAH'S FIND ONLY MADE HER CRY

OVER THE YEARS HANNAH MARRIED TWICE
BOTH GRAND EVENTS WITH BRIDE'S MAIDS AND WHITE RICE
BUT, SHE GAVE IT UP FOR GOOD AT FORTY-FIVE

SHE SETTLED INTO A QUIET LIFE
A LOT OF READING, NOT A LOT OF STRIFE
BUT, FEW OF THE THINGS THAT MAKE ONE FEEL ALIVE

AND THE YEARS ROLLED ON
HANNAH'D SIT IN THE PARK BY THE GOLDFISH POND
AND SHE'D GAZE AT THE SUN UNTIL IT WAS ALMOST GONE
HANNAH FOUND SHE COULD CARRY ON

IT WAS A SUNDAY AFTERNOON
HANNAH STARED AT THE GRAY-FACED, SUNLIT MOON
AND SOMEONE SAID, "IT DOES LOOK QUITE REAL"

AND SOMETHING ABOUT THE SOUND OF HIS VOICE
WAS SO FAMILIAR - THEY WOULD BOTH REJOICE
AT DISCOVERING THEY HAD ONCE BEEN BEST OF FRIENDS

AND THEN TIME STOOD STILL
AND TOGETHER THEY STROLLED TO THE WISHING WELL
AND BOTH MADE A WISH ON THE SAME TEN CENTS
HANNAH'S FIND, FINALLY MADE SO MUCH SENSE
FROM THE ONE WHO'D JUMPED OVER THE FENCE
