‘Here there be troubles’ the sign flashed only in my head,
I knew better but pressed on instead,
Chasing her while she was in love with him,
I wish I had known how that would work out back then,
Ten years later I can now look back and see,
Experience had a painfully steep price for me,
With age comes less desire to seek that road less travelled,
The one with the jagged glass hidden in the grass,
In my youth I thought ‘what’s that sparkling down there?’
And off I would go knowing full well it wasn’t diamonds or dew,
So what, then, was the draw if I truly knew,
That only trouble would come from my curiosity?
Was it just lust or love in her I hoped to see?
Time and distance tries to make me think it was the former,
But at the time I would have sworn ‘twas loves current flowing,
Nonetheless, I proceeded full well knowing,
Down what darkened road I was going,
And that no good could come of this…
But…
Then again there was her kiss,
And maybe a memory of that alone,
Is all the good there is now and nothing more,
Thursday Morning, when both time and I stood still,
At her front door I held her close in the misting cool,
And kissed her again and again and again,
Just a memory of a kiss we shared,
On her doorstep at the end of fall,
There was a diamond sparkling in that grass after all.
