A poem about staying together.

The Marriage Poem

Monica Vanzant-Duke©2005

Marriage is as marriage does, it could not be more clear

Future nuptials please beware! I need for you to hear,

My words regarding this true state, no parable for sure

To heed not what I say in verse is failure with no cure.

When two thee wed and say, “I Do”, elation reigns supreme

Mellifluous they both must be, their faces all agleam

The vows so shared with loving smiles are just the start I say

Of future conversations of things yet to come their way

Cherish the euphoric thoughts of moments just ahead

Soon enough real life kicks in, as is the case I dread

Feelings change and people grow, sometimes apart I fear

If strength of love is weak and wan the outcome is quite clear

If I had to choose one most important thing to share

Communication would be it, make no mistake ‘tis rare

For human beings to display their feelings openly

So I will just reiterate how urgent speak can be

Cynical I might well sound, but past experience shows

That life is ever changing, and includes some highs and lows

Marriage, when the stars are right, can lift the heart supreme

The end of one, so painful, leaves you nothing more to dream

So take these thoughts I share with you to wisely stay a pair

Emotions felt but not so shared will likely cause a flare

Our happiness, so fleeting we must treasure to the end

This great euphoric moment, my best wishes I do send.
