In 1991, my son, Joe, was in the Iraq War. Although the War didn't last long, each day that went by was a day of agony for all of my family and families around the world. I remember how I felt Christmas Eve with my son away from home in a dangerous foreign land, and how he must have felt being away from his loved ones. God bless the families who have loved ones in Iraq.

T’was the night before Christmas
Gifts to happy people I give
Safe, warm and content
In nice homes they do live.

I visited a military barracks
Their beds filled the floor
These soldiers were so tired
Left their clothes at the door.

Instead of red socks
Hanging from a mantle, filled with candy
Found brogan boots hanging from bunk beds
They were worn and sandy.

Looked into their faces
And tears filled my eyes
Young people so scared
The fear you couldn’t disguise

People back home enjoy freedom
Each day of the year
Because of brave men
Like the soldiers, I see here

Their faces so sad
Barracks in disorder
Could not fathom these are faces
Of our fighting soldiers

I stood there and wondered
There were so many alone
On Christmas Eve separated from their families
Away from their homes

But I am here with these soldiers
Tonight they’ll be loved
I spoke of Christmas Eve
And our Lord up above

I cried along with them
As I felt their pain
Told them that this is not forever
Their happiness, they’ll regain

Spent the night with these troops
Shed many a tear
Wished them a Merry Christmas
And a happier New Year
