A Promise

Welcome my spiritual friend I see you have entered the Chamber of Confessions. Here both confession and promises are addressed. Let us examine the promises first. For this is the beginning of the fulfillment of the promise. Why is that you ask…why, because a promise was made before we ever were.
Now then, note that promises exceed all measurement. For there is an abyss of depth in them as to meaning, a heaven of height in them as to excellence, and an ocean of breadth in them regarding their duration.
My spiritual friend, have you a promise to render? How many times we either are provided one or offer one in exchange. Each party is resting something important on the promise. All the while, neither the item, nor the time, not even the sum value is of any worth, if the intent and fulfillment is not initially perceived and then realized.
A promise…what is it? An easy example is if you have the title to some property, and you gaze upon it, your heart is quickly filled with joy and you’re exhilarated beyond compare, knowing that this form declares this property is yours. Yet if you should lose it or it is accidentally torn or burned, …check now…has your peace departed with it? If so, then you have failed to understand the principle. The loss of the paper does not dismiss your rights. You simply cannot present it to those who may come to observe, nevertheless, a copy, or shall I say proof, is easily retrieved. It is the same in the event you have become emotionally involved with someone. Outside of a marriage, there is no paper declaring the event, but simply your promise to one other and the understandings, which are inherent with such an undertaking.
Thus, as you can see, a promise has numerous forms and is surrendered in full in a multitude of ways. Without a promise, there is no hope, without hope there can be no reason to validate faith. Did it ever occur to you to inquire why the way of God’s dealing with those who turn to Him should be arranged via promises? He could have bestowed His blessings at once and without giving us notice of His intention. In this way He would have obviated the necessity of a covenant concerning them. Yet, at the very beginning His declaration to Eve was also His solemn promise.
And so, I ask you, “Why, then, has He revealed His purposes of blessing? Why is it that His dealings with His people from the gate of Eden until now have been upon the footing of publicly expressed promises?”
Doesn’t the question answer itself? In the first place, we could not have been believers if there had not been a promise in which to believe. If the system of salvation is to be by faith, a promise must be made upon which faith can exercise itself. The plan of salvation by faith is selected because it is most suitable to the principle of grace. This involves the giving of promises so that faith may have both food and foundation. Faith without a promise would be a foot without the ground to stand upon. Such a faith, if it could be called faith, would be unworthy of the plan of grace.
Yet, what of that you ask?…You must see that God promised to give His own Son, and even His own Self, to His people, and He did it. For this is the month that we recall and renew our faith. Nevertheless, many draw a line somewhere, but the Lord sets no bounds to the gifts, which He ordains for those who believe.
Moreover, it is a charming thought that our God designedly gives us promises of good things that we may enjoy them twice—first by faith, and then by fruition. He gives twice by giving by a promise. We also receive twice in embracing the promise by faith. The time for the fulfillment of many promises is not always right away. By faith we realize the promise, and the foreshadowing of the expected blessing fills our souls with the benefit long before it actually comes. It is the same as our lover calls us, and tells us they are coming home, for we have not seen them in a long while, surely we do not question it. We hear their voice and are immediately elated; we do not ponder nor consider the traffic, other individuals nor any possible distraction, nor disturbance, but wait for their arrival. When it happens we are exhilarated beyond words
We have an instance of this upon a large scale in Old Testament; from which If God, Himself, bows before His own law, what more can be done? For indeed He has! There is more in the atonement by way of merit than there is in all human sin by way of demerit. As we celebrate this month, in remembrance of the historic event, which many, will quickly attest that December is incorrect; and I concur! Nevertheless, He has come… and when He comes again, what shall you say?
Oh my spiritual friend, confess what it is that burdens you so, and dismiss all that you cannot understand, and in turn embrace what you know and foster your hope into the fruition of faith as this time has come once again as a token to remind us all. Do what is required in the “Camber of Confession,” confess, accept and receive. Here you must perform the two portions of the promise…follow His example. Remember He went first… it is now your move.
