A bit of theodicy wrapped up into some musings on the perplexities of life
I settle down in my plush chair
Flipping pages, breath quickens, heart flutters
What I read just isnít fair
Itís not fair, itís not fair, itís not fair!
I flip to the end of the book
And read the final paragraph
Deep breath, deep breath, for look:
The good guys win
Back to the story.
The hero hits some roadblocks, some hard times!
Nothing about this is boring.
What a great author!
I flip to the end again.
Reassured, I go back and tackle the forces of darkness.
I repeat, we win, we win,
To reassure myself during a tense scene
God, theyíre dying!
A battle scene: theyíre dropping
Like flies flying
Through a hurricane off the Florida coast
I find myself wondering
Why all of this is necessary,
This war and plundering,
To bring about the happy ending I desire
Whatís with this author?
Why couldnít he just start with the happy ending?
Why must he offer
So much pain and suffering along the way?
I remind myself
Itís a story, and stories have both heroes and villains
Every one on my shelf
Has both good guys and bad, plus victims and some in between
There would be no story at all!
Iíd have picked
No book, but just a happy endingóa meaningless one at that
A happy ending
Without conflict is just a mediocre piece of art
But it doesnít touch the heart
