MY FATHER'S COAT

My father's coat had seen it's better days
one hundred years before he found its warmth
Its worn brass buttons cocked-a-snook at military ways
and hung rebelious like nodding tulips in the dawn

Threadbare sleeves the legacy of life-long toil
a source of humour for the well-heeled middle classed
Ingrained like Van Gogh's heart with honest soil
A tribute to a golden age long past

Silk lining long since cut away for finer use
Harsh northern winds cheated by a belt of string
Collar turned against the rain so many times now loose
And yet I saw a robe of ermine round the shoulders of a king
