When I hear about forty year marriages breaking up, I feel distressed. I ask, "How can anyone walk away from someone they have shared forty years with? Imagine all the shared memories, all the special times, and the love and support they are throwing away. How could they live that long together without it?"

How can they not feel they have lost something special? Shouldn't love be stronger?

In life we will find trouble.
As time passes, we wonder.
why life ends in a rubble
and we destroy and blunder?

As wars rage on and hate thrives,
pride destroys us and others.
When not even one survives,
can any sleep with druthers?

Long relationships break up;
few are faithful to the end.
Love, like wine, better to sup;
patience and love should blend?

Where can we find happiness,
when all are borne with flaw?
If made into His very likeness,
couldn’t our cold hearts thaw?

Best that we die giving our all;
remain faithful till the end
and forgive all before His call;
thus, allowing wounds to mend.

What you say is true, however sad as it may be, we do not nor can we know what goes on inside of their hearts and how many more years it has been since they grew cold. Life goes on and many of us start all over again even knowing we may not live enough years to count as a long lived relationship. Love is enough for now.

good one Pat, made me think, Al Gore and his wife come to mind, my wife and I have been together 26 years, until death do us part. But think about this, there have been two woman in our area who had their husbands murdered, just here recently on the news a man was arrested for murdering his wife in mexico, so now I guess simply splitting up sounds better, cheers
