Ode To A Storm

ODE TO THE WINDSTORM OF 1995
Dec. 3-4, 1995
(to be sung to the tune of Oh Christmas Tree)
By Deborah Turner
c. December 5, 1995

Oh evergreen (whoosh!)
Oh evergreen (crack!)
What a surprise your branches be (crash!)

Oh alder trees (creak!)
You fell to earth (bang!)
Now I am sitting in the dark! (Hey!)

You fell across our driveways (boom!)
And covered up our rhodie beds (smash!)
Oh evergreens and alders trees (Snap!)
What a mess you've turned out to be! (Whuump!)

Oh frightful winds (whoosh!)
A nasty storm! (whip!)
Came blowing in to Washington (Swoosh!)

Oh go away (crash!)
Leave us alone (smash!)
And take your thundering with you! (Boom! Ack!)

You tossed the ferries all around (Slam!)
And nearly made them run aground (Bang!)
With hundred mile an hour winds (Whooowww!)
You have created havoc here! (Crash Boom Bang!)

Oh zephyr winds (Sigh)
You lightly blow (Whisper)
Our neighbor’s trees into his house (Snap! Thump!)

Have you not done
Enough damage (rrrummble! Crash!)
While they are down in Mexico? (Sun and sand)

His rhododendrons are now crushed (Smoosh!)
He’ll take them out and bury them (Sob Sniff!)
Just take your winds and falling trees (Crackle)
We want this storm to go away.

We got our chainsaws out today (Rrrrr!)
To cut up all the trees that fell (crunch!)
We’ll have plenty of firewood
To keep us warm in winter time (crackle!)

We can finally drive our cars
Out of the driveway to the stores
Our lights are on, we can begin
To begin living once again!

There was a typhoon (which is a hurricane in the North Western Pacific) that passed off the Washington coast In December 1995. The resulting storm caused havoc all around the state. This is my somewhat humourous recounting of it, though the damage was real. We had a couple of other storms hit us shortly after that, but most of the damage had already been done.

Deb,

I acutally sang the song to the tune (hope no one was listening) and it came to life for me! Great job.

Isn't it funny how we can make a funny thing of an event that scared us to death when we experienced. Bill
