When you are a new Soldier to the Army
The military world is so strange, so demanding
Yet it is the First Sergeant that makes it feel ok
To be a part of the new way of doing things

It is you the First Sergeant who takes
On the most important Mission
Taking Care of the Soldier

To many they feel that there is nothing more important
Than the organization mission
They are so focused on the goal that the
Resource is often short changed

However, you First Sergeant have always ensured
That the Soldier was taken care of by
Ensuring they were mentally and physically prepared
Encouraging personal and professional growth
Ensuring that the family was ok
Through mentoring, correcting and leading the way

Taking Care of the Soldier often means
Leaving your family to take care of your Military Family
Going to the hospital in the early morning hours
Being their to provide strength in disarray
Being the disciplinarian when a Soldier strays

Yet, through the years, you provided consistent Care
Through the unselfish sacrifices of time you committed
To ensure that a Soldier stays within Army Standards
Soldier excels beyond their own expectations
Teaching future Leaders
Guiding in time of War as well as Peace
You are the perfect example of what it is to honestly
Take Care of Soldiers

I know nothing of a First Sargeant's responsibilities, but I find that military discipline is rather archaic and negative to the human psyche. All this emphasis on “taking care” of someone who will follow orders regardless of the consequences because that is the “Army way” leads to the kinds of psychological problems that follow after war is over.
