A Silent Right

This poem was written when I was at college in the late 1980s. I had an interpreter for all my classes and well, it illustrates why I needed an interpreter to help me accomplish college, of course!

                                                    THE SILENT RIGHT

Deafness

 a gateway to

a dark closet.

A professor lectures

 but I listen to sign

To come into reality.

I am Deaf

 BUT I embrace

the world of knowledge

 through signs.

Signs unite Chaucer and Marx

like brothers of a hearing world–

but I use them as rich music to

 get me through school.

My interpreter, like a faithful Saint

Bernard on a cold night, tries to save me

from the painful noise in the world.

She ain’t sexy but

 smart enough to sign

everything the prof says.

Yet, with my hearing aids on the table

I feel pleased and relaxed

As my hearing sisters and brothers

keep screaming like Casper the ghost

 and gulping beer

as I lay down to a blissful sleep

like the three bears.

Very interesting--I don't think I've seen this one before--good imagery!!It helps me to see your life through your signing. perjhaps a silent world is a little more peaceful than the noisy, stressful one of those who can't turn off the sound.
