If the truth be told and I be honest,
an honest lie I’ll tell
Of silly dreams and hapless hopes
that I’d rather not confess.
Whereupon my lips a lie does rest
to hide a smitten heart
Holding knowledge close and dear
with secrets near and far.
To tell the truth, a lie will rise
and fables shall form at once
In the hope that the listener and I
will both play a delightful dunce
Pretending I have made some sense
with a tongue that forgets what’s real.
So if truth be told and I be honest,
just my honest lie to tell,
I simply ask that you believe me
and trust that the truth won’t sell!
