As I probably mentioned already, I love to write poems about love and loss. This is my way of coping with things that are happening or have happened in my life. Here is another that I would like to share.

I lay awake at night

Peering into the darkness of my lonely soul

Afraid to close my eyes

Afraid to face what pleasures my dreams may hold

But despite my fears

Slumber take me still

Like a predator closing in on its prey

It moves in for the kill

And I find myself drifting

To places both familiar and unknown

To a place hidden in my heart

The place where love once roamed

But as I search the crevices

Of a spirit broken after love has gone

I find that there is nothing left but a wasteland

Barren, brittle, and cold as stone

My eyes fly open as I wake

Once again captivated by fear

As reality sets in and I realize

That love no longer lives here

Aretha, your poems are beautiful and insightful;I enjoyed reading all of them.
I did have a bit of trouble reading the lovely handwritten ones, because of the resolution I think, but I stuck with it,and they too are great.Thank you so much for sharing them with me.
You may have set the record as being the writer who began her writing career the earliest,or at the least perhaps the youngest one having a diverse audience.
If you are new to the site, welcome.I'd like to read more of your poetry as it becomes available.
