barefoot, in my car, on my lunch break,
overlooking the pond at the local park,
i dream of running on a beach, free from
the dramatic duty of punching-of-the-clock,
imagining myself as one who could walk the shore
with my children and my husband,
oblivious to the pain of the screaming checkbook,
able to provide them sunshine...
i hear the sun is shining but i can't lift my head
up enough from this reality to enjoy what is
in front of me and because of this dilemma...
i still play imagine sometimes.

determined, i sit at the typewriter, at my
borrowed space at work, trying to capture how
nikki giovanni must feel when she can write and know
that there is no report waiting for her to complete
and there is no e-mail asking her to do
another person's work without receiving
another person's salary...
how does debbie allen feel knowing that if she wanted to open a dance studio she could and not sacrifice
something called, uhm, food, to follow her dream
and sleep well at night while i worry about
what's going to happen tomorrow...
i hear the moon is glowing but i can't lift my head
up enough from this reality to enjoy what is
in front of me and because of this dilemma...
i still play imagine sometimes.

laying back in the tub with my eyes closed,
imagining that i was in a house that i owned and
could afford and that the thought of bad credit was
somebody else's nightmare and that i could relax because i knew that no one would call my name because
they'd be occupied in their own space,
doing their own thing...
i try to block out the memory of my 2 minute shower
and the pressing demands of being who i am,
feeling immobilized from providing,
from riding the wave of my dream...

i hear that it's not raining outside,
but, through my confused tears, i cannot tell the difference...
that's reality...

but i still play imagine sometimes.
