Damned Words

Words....they drive me crazy at times
Sometimes they seem to jump from my fingertips
Already formed and ready for the page
Other times they have to be pulled
Yelling and screaming from my psyche
Like an old fashioned dentist
Trying to extract a stubborn molar
These words refuse to come out
Without one hell of a fight
And there are times that I just don't have it
The energy for the fight, the creativity
To go 10 rounds with this adversary
This 300 pound monster with sweaty biceps
And overhung brow, ready to rip off my face
With all the finesse of Tyson chewing off an ear
I want to win, I want the words to appear
As if by magic as I'm sure they do for Judeace
Dempsey, Dreamweaver and Lori
I'll bet they never find themselves
Face down on a dirty canvas
Wiped out in the third round
By words that have bigger gloves
And maybe a better manager
Maybe they practiced a little more
Or maybe it boils down to ambition
Maybe these words of mine want to stay inside
More than I want them to come out
And it just boils down to the proper lure
Maybe my sports metaphors are wrong
And it's more like fishing and as usual
I'm using the wrong bait
Whatever it is, these words are winning folks
They are staying inside, refusing to come out
To grace these pages with their presence
So I am reduced once more, to filling the lines
With nonsense and awkward prose
Hoping perhaps that they will take pity on me
And appear to save the day....and my pride

(((sue)))

you captured the frustration every author feels--i've been there

whaaaat? me, of the 750 plus poems, get writer's block? yep.

it happens. to all of us. including me. beLIEVE me, i struggle at times. not often, but when it does, it's DEVASTATING.

i look at poets like judeace. eileen. kate clifford. josie bohan. robert blackwell. andre. floria. lori. dreamweaver. regis. so many more worthy to be called poet. and then there's me...little me, running off at the mouth, wondering if i'll EVER be heard, will i EVER have a book or be read.

sometimes, i'm awakened by poems; most of the time, i sit down in front of the blank computer screen, and a word or line comes to me...and i just type the first thing that comes to mind. sometimes, i like the direction it's headed, another time, "DELETE" damn damn damn!

i hope your muse doesn't fight you any more, and may your pen and inspiration never run dry

((((HUGS)))) and love, karla.
