A SMILING OASIS

My love is no mirage - she’s a smiling oasis
In the cultural desert.

I first saw her in London, walking with her father,
Her father, or a man old enough to be her father.
She was on her way to the National Gallery,
To see the fine paintings.
I followed her down the centuries,
I mean, I followed her from period to period –

Finally in the nineteenth-century I spoke:

- Howzitgaun, hen?

No, I said no such thing, merely smiled,
And the man who was her father,
Her father, or a man old enough to be her father,
Observed me gravely.

I knew I was looking at kindred spirits -
The Gauls for beauty and amorousness!
Goes an old Gaelic proverb.

My love is no mirage, she’s a smiling oasis
In the cultural desert.

Aye, it costs nothing to smile and makes the world go round, I reckon. Reminds me of me pome, "Beautiful Smile", which says much the same thing, but different! You have an artist's eye for beauty, Ken. Love this; can't think how I missed it first time round... Kate xx
