I see courage when I look into your eyes.
Body weakened by sickness, yet you still try.
I hear you at night when you stifle the cries.
I think, 'There but for the Grace of God, go I.'

I see courage when I look into your face.
You are determined to win, to take first place.
I hear you at night when you get up to pace.
You rarely complain when by pain you're embraced.

I see courage when I look into your soul.
To overcome the enemy is your goal.
I hear you at night trying to gain control.
I see courage as the disease takes its toll.

I hear courage when I hear you singing songs.
Would I have that fortitude, would I be strong?
I hear you at night, God, I scream, 'That's so wrong!'
You deserve better, not this hell that's prolonged.

I see courage when I remember your life.
It feels like someone cut my heart with a knife.
I hear you at night, the memories are rife.
How I miss you, Darling, my sweet, loving wife.

"There but for the Grace of God go I"...this brought tears to my eyes. I can hear this advice as my father said it so many times to his eight children. That one phrase stuck with me all my life. Thanks for this tender poem.
