A Smile

Is it always genuine

in a child?

Becauses it releases such unjaded light.

The flash of his teeth

the sudden creases

in an unformed face--

no calculation

his joy as involuntary

as his next breath--

where is the subtext?

Later--

he may use it as a mask

perhaps a subterfuge

for a Machiavellian move--

but enoy it now

before he has

something to prove.
