A Rattlesnake in the Basement

A Rattlesnake in the Basement

There’s an elephant in the kitchen

We pretend he isn’t there

He cries about the basement,

says a rattlesnake lives down there

Wanted, dead or alive, he cries

that snake really must go

The elephant in the kitchen

doesn’t have a soul

The rattlesnake in the basement

more rattle than he is bite,

whines about the kitchen

says the elephant isn’t right

Open your foolish eyes, he cries

that elephant has to go

the rattlesnake in the basement

doesn’t have a soul

There’s an army on the staircase

anxious to drop their bomb

to hell with right or wrong

they kill children, dad, and mom

We cleaned out the basement, they cried

snaked him out of his hole

The army on the staircase

doesn’t have a soul

Impressionist-esoteric-symbolistical and surreal imagery in a clear picture of our times, "A Rattlesnake in the Basement" has conveyed its message.

Karla, I'd like to add that I also stand behind our troops (at least the ones who aren't breaking international law to torture prisoners). Like most, I have someone very dear to me in the group sent there. My use of the word 'army' is symbolic of the commander in thief, not the individuals I believe were sent unnecessarily to do his dirty work.

(((sandy)))

as an ex air force medic, i have to respond to this one.

i will stand behind our troops, 100%. don't blame them for the war--they are only following the orders from the elephant. :) trust me--the army, marines, navy and air force personnel have souls. the grunts, the little peons, the low ranking ones do, anyway. don't know about the leaders.

still, a provocative piece. well done!

(((HUGS))) and love, karla. :)

Sandy,
WOW!!! love this. Man just don't have a clue. Very valuable lesson here. Imagine what this world would be like if everyone decided to get along and co-exist. Thank You for your eye opening poem.
