Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, sad and weary
Over what has happened to sports compared to the times of yore
While I wondered, rather dismayed, what happened to the good old days
When athletes played 'cause they loved the game, not for glory, not for fame,
There were no drugs for them to use, no athletes were charged with abuse
Those days are gone, evermore.

Now they're overpaid, unschooled jocks who do their thinking with their...(you know)
Attitudes, gangsta wanna-bes, whine because 'they poor'
With egos matching salary, and no more autographs for free
They act up, no problem, man, they get away with it 'cause they can
No one's gonna say anything, look at his trophies and his rings

As long as America is more excited to see men crush each other on astroturf than play chess, shove a little ball through a hoop than read poetry, this is the way it's going to be. Money talks and they walk. I echo Lori and add that it's similar to gangsta rap. Everybody says they hate it, but somebody's buying those records and buying into the synergistic marketing strategy that's turned it into a billion dollar industry.

Nevertheless, well said, Karla. I agree. The owners and the players are all thinking with their (you know) whether literal or figuratively. Rock on, girl!

I too get tired of over paid, under talented players who do nothing but whine. They celebrate average plays like they did something awesome. I could retire on just a portion of just one players money. They don't realize it but they're killing the publics want to pay to see them. I used to collect sports items, and since 1999 I finally got fed up with them and said enough is enough. I'd rather watch high school kids play with hearet on Sundays than these overbearing idiots. OK , now I'm in a bad mood LOL

... you not got your equivalent of our darling Jonny Wilkinson, then?! But then, the "gentle" (??!!) sport of Rugby Union hasn't quite made it big over the pond, has it?! Yeah, sometimes the name "sport" is a total misnoma these days, have to agree. And "team spirit" is certainly something the world needs to re-learn afresh, I think! Neat write, as always, Karla. TY Kate xx

I like sports... It's easy to blame the athletes. I say the fans are the problem. If fans would stop paying for the product, the product would change.

Well said, Karla. The current lock out in professional hockey reeks to high heaven. I am frankly disgusted with professional sports. Merci pour ce commentaire poétique, mon amie. Amour et paix. Régis

No I don't know, explain it to me in detail (LOL!)...and your right and its a damn shame...even if drugs are being used by the players, just keep it silent and clean up the problem, we don't need to know it all, do we? Ed

I would be glad to see a game played for the sake of just being able to play. Excellent write here.

I quit watching and supporting professional sporting events when the first baseball strike broke my heart. It was then that I realized that players were not playing for the love of the game. I still watch college sports, though. It is great to see the kids on the field/court so excited to have a chance to play. As far as professional sports, you are right Karla, "Enough is Enough" and that was the truth for me many years ago.
Take care,

And I don't watch sports, why? In this world a lot of changes need to come about.
