Desert Dawn

The world holds a certain silence
As the sun boldly breaks
Above the mountain

It drips its light upon the valley
Like an artist's brush
Dressing an empty canvas

The indigo blanket of night
Pulls back behind the mesa
As the starry night-lights go out one by one

The fog rises from the river
Adding a satiny soft-focus
To the emerging day

Mallards paddling two by two
Casually gather morning morsels
From the banks of the Rio Grande

The air is rich from yesterday’s rain
And it fills my senses
While dawn in the desert unveils its special treasures

The brisk chill of the morning
Still overpowers the warmth of the sun
But soon will yield to the bright yellow light of day

For these brief moments
I drink in the sunrise, my senses bathed
Like the air from the rising fog

In this, my quiet time, as the world yawns
I peacefully breathe in the wonders of this land
And become one with the Creator of it all
