Abdi-noor Mohamed's poem, "Sounds of Misery," inspired this one. Thank you, dear Brother, allow me to join you, in raising a voice in defense of little girls. FGM, Female Genital Mutilation, must be stopped NOW.

My fear cries out as the time draws nigh.
This was promised to me from the beginning,
Ever since the moment of my birth,
Mother has told me what will happen to me.
She said that it would be over quick.
She said it will hurt but I would soon heal.
She said that it had happened to her.
And look at her--everything turned out all right.
But Mother forgets--I heard her cries
As she begged Allah to make it go away.
I saw what she endured every month
I never saw a woman have so much pain.
She said she almost died having me
And that is why I am her one and only child.
Since I am a girl, this must be done,
This cutting away of the bad part of me--
I only have one question to ask
When my blood splashes onto the thirsty Earth...
I thought I was a good little girl.
Why would she wish this on her only daughter?

Powerful Sad and very awakening poem Thank you Karla. How tragic.
You really capture things so well. This brings a big lump in the throat here as tears and anger swell.

there's no bad part of a child as we all well know ... it is adult inadequacies and hostilities the child misinterprets as their own ...

Yes, Karla it is a sad thing and must be stopped. How can parents and elders be so cruel is some thing really hard to understand.

A powerful write, need of the day.

Again, you tackle the reality of one person's barbarism against another in the most poignant and deeply penetrating way - talking of the feelings, rather than the act. I salute you, Karla. Who can know the reasoning behind this male-pleasing mutilation - but what speaks "worse" is the tolerance and acceptance of the women in such cultures that allow it. Emancipation is not only a relatively modern concept, but a relativly narrow and priviliged one. Globalisation is sadly only commercial and not social. This makes me weep - "thank you" seems not the right thing to say in such circumstances, but bless you as always for your forthright write. Kate xx
